“It’s amazing he’s still alive,” said New Milford Police Lt. Michael Burns about a man who’d been hit by a car then dragged in the opposite direction for half a mile by another.
The amazing bouncing man was Andrew Rippe, a U.S. Army specialist who had just returned from Iraq. He was crossing the road at 6:20am in the pouring rain going toward his grandmother’s house.
The second driver, Roslyn Gottlieb, thought she’d run over a piece of cardboard and so kept on driving towards a convenience store to grab a coffee. Obviously the drag on the car and screams of “OH DEAR GOD STOP!” didn’t alert her to something out of the ordinary.
On pulling up to the store, Michael Obertlik noticed something peculiar under the car. “My friend thought it was a dummy, but I said, ‘That’s a real person. The man is still breathing,’”.
Rescue teams had to use a special inflatable bag to lift the car Rippe who had a broken leg and lost skin. He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center in a serious condition.
