Donuts No Good For Convicts
Tuesday, January 9th, 2007
In a bid to improve the health of inmates at Franklin County jail, County Commissioner Mary Jo Kilroy has suspended a $55,000 annual contract to supply donuts to the prison on hold.
“There won’t be doughnuts,” said Chief Deputy Sheriff Mark Barrett, the jail administrator. “It was not a frequent food item to begin with.”
The county’s decision to eliminate donuts from inmates’ diets comes as artery-clogging trans fats are being removed from various types of foods.
Jolly Pirate Enterprises would have supplied the glazed and jellied donuts at $4 a dozen.
Prisoners will still be able to indulge in their daily portions of “Beouf a la Mess” and “Slop Bourguignon”.
